Strategy · computer or a friend

Sunday Chess.

A beautiful board. Your next brilliant move.

Three computer styles, helpful move hints and unlimited time to think.

Preparing your chess board…

A good place to make your next move.

Play the computer or pass the board to a friend on the same device. Start as White or Black, choose a relaxed or deeper-thinking computer style, and take as much time as you need. Your match is saved in this browser, so you can return to the same position.

How to play.

  1. White moves first. Select one of your pieces to see its legal destinations, then select a highlighted square. You can also navigate the board with the arrow keys and select with Enter.
  2. Protect your king. If you are in check, your next move must remove the threat. Checkmate ends the game when the checked king has no legal escape.
  3. Castling and en passant are available when legal. A pawn reaching the last rank opens a choice of queen, rook, bishop or knight.
  4. Use Take back to explore another idea. Against the computer it rewinds your move and the reply. Move hint suggests a legal move and records that you used help.
  5. The game detects checkmate, stalemate, threefold repetition, insufficient material and the fifty-move rule. This casual game automatically ends at those draw conditions.

At your pace, on your device.

This is computer or local two-player chess. There are no online opponents, clocks, prizes or rated matches. Computer styles use a time-limited search and have no official Elo rating. Game progress and hints remain in this browser and do not sync to your account. Use the privacy controls to clear saved progress.

Move validation uses chess.js, BSD-2-Clause. The computer search and interface are part of Sunday Puzzles.
